Mindset, Influence, and the Business of Dentistry
Focusing on The Right Tools for High-Achieving Dentists
Beyond the dental chair, the tools that shape your success in mindset, influence, and business growth are just as critical as the instruments in your practice. As a high-achieving dentist, you understand that precision matters. The right tools improve efficiency, enhance patient care, and elevate outcomes. But true success isn’t just about clinical expertise—it’s also about mastering the mental, strategic, and leadership tools that drive lasting impact in your career and practice.
Through my experience working with high-achieving dentists and CEOs, I’ve seen firsthand that mastery in mindset, influence, and collaboration is just as essential as mastering the latest dental technology. Without these, even the most skilled clinicians struggle with burnout, overwhelm, and stalled career growth. The truth is, success isn’t just about what you do with your hands—it’s about how you think, how you lead, and how you leverage your influence to create a thriving practice and a fulfilling life.
Mindset: The Ultimate Tool for Growth
You can have the best training, the best clinical skills, and the best location, but if your mindset isn’t aligned for success, you’ll constantly hit roadblocks. High-performance athletes and top CEOs know this: mindset is more than half the game. The same applies in dentistry. And as with high performance athletes, dentists should also have a coach.
The most successful dentists I’ve worked with—those who have built thriving practices without sacrificing their quality of life—have all mastered a growth mindset. They see obstacles as opportunities. They are resilient in the face of challenges. They prioritize their mental game as much as their clinical expertise.
A few key mindset shifts to implement:
Embrace adaptability. The dental industry is evolving fast. Being open to change, whether in technology, team management, or marketing, keeps you ahead of the game.
Shift from scarcity to abundance. Many dentists operate from a place of fear—fear of competition, fear of losing patients, fear of failing. The most influential professionals focus on opportunities rather than limitations.
Prioritize your well-being. Burnout is real. Taking care of your mental, emotional, and physical health isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity for sustainable success.
Influence: The Tool That Multiplies Your Impact
Influence isn’t just about marketing or social media followers. It’s about how you inspire trust, persuade effectively, and build relationships—with your patients, your team, and your industry peers. If you want to scale your practice and elevate your career, mastering influence is non-negotiable.
Robert Cialdini, the renowned expert on persuasion, identified six principles of influence that are directly applicable to dentistry. Consider the following:
Reciprocity: People feel obligated to return favors. Offering educational content, patient perks, or community involvement (keeping in mind all applicable laws) makes patients more likely to stay loyal to your practice.
Commitment & Consistency: When patients commit to a small action—like signing up for a consultation—they’re more likely to follow through with bigger commitments like treatment plans. Be consistent with your follow-up. Keep all commitments.
Social Proof: Patient testimonials and before-and-after photos help new patients feel confident in choosing you. This can also mean having others essentially endorse you so you yourself are not the one patting yourself on the back.
Authority: Position yourself as a trusted expert by speaking, publishing, or being involved in professional organizations. You are already an authority as a doctor but you can add to this in many powerful ways.
Liking: People do business with those they like and trust. Creating genuine connections with patients and peers builds influence. Make sure your team also is on board.
Scarcity: Exclusive offers and limited-time opportunities create urgency, encouraging patients to take action. Consider your niche and let patients know you are in demand and may not have a ton of openings for the exclusive services you offer.
By strategically integrating these principles, you can create a more persuasive, high-converting practice that thrives in even the most competitive environments.
Collaboration & Business Growth: The Hidden Tools of Success
Having the right team, systems, and strategic collaborations in place is essential for scaling your practice without working yourself into exhaustion. Too many high-achieving dentists fall into the trap of trying to do everything themselves. They micromanage, they hesitate to delegate, and they find themselves stuck in a cycle of stress and inefficiency.
The most successful dentists leverage:
Strategic Partnerships – Aligning with key organizations, referral networks, and industry influencers to create more opportunities.
High-Performing Teams – Hiring and training staff who align with your vision, values, and goals to reduce friction and increase productivity.
Delegation & Automation – Investing in the right software, systems, and leadership training to free up time for what matters most. Never neglect your leadership training, a frequently overlooked essential in dentistry.
